I bought that set about 2 years ago. I’ve been extremely happy with it.

I’m not someone who should be giving tool advice by any means but the Ryobi stuff I have has been awesome. I just bit the bullet on a battery-powered lawn mower so I’ll see how that goes.

Do you use the impact much?

Ryobi - Wonderful for a few years...then broke. Their batteries for me have been particularly suspect.

I have the orbital polisher and a couple batteries. No issues so far, a lot cheaper than the prior versions of li-ion polishers.

I’ve got the previous gen non-lion version of the drill. It’s pretty well bulletproof. Dropped from 3 stages of scaffold onto concrete, probably more than once, still going strong.

I still need an impact though.

They’ve gotta be a step up from my 20+ year old Dewalt 12v.

I beat the shit out of that stuff at my old job. No complaints, does the job. I use my drill a LOT though and bought a Dewalt set for myself and I’m happy with it.

They really do. I started with a drill. I now have an impact, jigsaw, weed eater, and hedge trimmer that use the same batteries. I have a Ryobi table saw too but it’s not battery powered. I rarely use it so the folding base made storage far easier.

I find their batteries crap out after about a year. Great tools but buying a new battery every year gets old.

I am a firm believer in buying the most expensive tools you can afford. And once you start buying battery powered tools you need to investigate all the other tools in the line as you are essentially buying into that ecosystem with batteries, etc.

I have not touched a Ryobi tool in years after trying to use some of their junk back in the day. I don’t care if they work great or not, they won’t get my money.

Spend the extra $50, get batteries that are 2.0ah vs 1.3ah and a name that isn’t synonymous with junk.

you are essentially buying into that ecosystem with batteries, etc.

This. New batteries can be almost the price of a new tool. And a lot of stuff is sold without a battery these days.

That said, new green/gray Ryobi is not the same as ‘ol blue. Might not be Makita or Milwaukee but much better than before.

I am already commited to the ryobi system for other battery powered tool i need, but if i was starting over fresh i would do rigid since they have lifetime battery warranties.

Back when I used to actually use a drill for a living the worst were the Dewalt products. 1 in 10 had a chuck that didn’t wobble. My father, who is a long time carpenter by trade, used to use only Bosch for this very reason - straight chucks with no wobble. He has since switched to Hitachi cordless tools which are also very very nice. Here is a 4 tool kit with 3.0ah batteries for $220.

My Makita 1/2 brushless hammer drill was a limp-wristed piece of crap gutless wonder. DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Bosch all have them beat in the cordless game.

That combo kit is the set I had. The impact driver was amazing, and the battery life was fantastic, but the drill was hot garbage. Hopefully you have better luck with yours. I sold it on CL for $200 and bought a new DeWalt set.

I love Ryobi. If you’re a home owner and at best does a few DIY projects a year, I can’t recommend Ryobi strong enough. I love the 40V outdoor tools and the 18V compatibility for entry level outdoor tools. All of that is on top of their vast lineup of regular tools

I wish someone would come up with some product that allowed you to use whatever battery with whatever tool.

What happens in ten years when all that ryobi crap doesnt work with the new ryobi charger/battery? you have to buy all new crap!

It’s hard to find the best. Option one is trial and error. Option two is trusting what someone else recommends.

I don’t like to take anyone else’s opinion about what they like. Some people just go with a thing because of its color. Unless it’s a jug of paint, I can care less what color the tool is. As long as it does what it’s purposed to do. Do it well and for a very long time.

Kinja'd!!! Sovande > PartyPooper2012

That’s fair. I think in the case of something like cordless tools the specs are all that matter. And the I don’t think the specs on the Ryobi tools I have looked at match up to the price they ask for them. Half the battery capacity of the competition for half 75% of the cost does not equal a good value for me.

I will say that I have a set of Tekton wrenches and sockets and I think they are fantastic. Snap-On quality? I have no idea since I would never spend that much for tools, but they are really quite nice.
